The Holy Spirit says through Peter that God has given us “all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:3, NKJV). By breathing out the very words of God, recorded in the Bible, and by sending His Spirit to live in us, teaching us to understand and obey those God-breathed words, the Father has equipped all who trust His Son for salvation with everything they need to know to please Him in life (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Does that mean that there is no true knowledge outside the Bible? No. It does mean, though, that there is no true knowledge outside the Bible that is needed for us to know and love God and to go through life doing what He wants us to do. When we cling to and act on His “exceedingly great and precious promises,” He allows us to become more and more like Him, and lets us share companionship with Him starting now and lasting forever (2 Peter 1:4; 2 Corinthians 5:1-9).
Becoming more and more like Christ isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a life-long marathon, growing up day by day, growing in our experience of grace and our knowledge of and love for Jesus (2 Peter 3:18). We aren’t just like Jesus yet (frankly, we’ve got a long way to go), but the testimony of Scripture is that those who belong to Jesus will one day be like Him—and that change process starts now (1 John 3:2-3). In fact, God promises to use every circumstance of life—even painful, terrible ones—to accomplish exactly that goal (Romans 8:28-30). My goal on this blog is to provide resources and links to help us along on that journey. We have a long way before we get home, but Jesus has promised that we will arrive safely if we will trust Him and follow Him for the rest of our lives (John 6:35-40, 10:9-10).
If you aren’t sure that Jesus has rescued you from yourself, if you’re not sure that you’re living like He’s your king (sometimes we Christians talk about this as Jesus being our Savior and Lord), here are a few useful links to help you think through the most important question you’ll ever consider:
